How the Martingale Works

Bet on an even-money proposition โ€” red at roulette, Player at baccarat, Pass Line at craps. If you lose, double the bet. Keep doubling until you win. When you win, you recover every prior loss plus one unit of profit, and you restart at your base bet.

The Martingale doesn't change your expected value โ€” it reshapes the distribution of outcomes. It trades a normal spread of small wins and losses for many tiny wins and one enormous loss. The average is identical. The experience is far more dangerous, because the tiny wins arrive first and build false confidence.

Table Limits: The Wall You Hit

Casinos publish minimum and maximum bets on every table. That ratio โ€” typically 100:1 to 500:1 โ€” determines exactly how many doublings the system can survive.

A standard $5 minimum table has a $500 maximum. That allows exactly seven doublings โ€” $5, $10, $20, $40, $80, $160, $320 โ€” and the eighth required bet of $640 is above the limit. You are structurally unable to complete the recovery. The system's core promise is void at the eighth loss, and you're down $635.

Table limits are not an obstacle the casino incidentally created. They exist in part precisely to cap negative progressions.

State the trade plainly: you are risking $10,235 to win $5 per sequence. Even at a 99.9% success rate, that risk-to-reward ratio cannot be profitable, because the 0.1% event costs 2,000 times what each success earns.

Expected Value Doesn't Change. Ever.

This is the part that ends the argument. Expected value is linear and additive. If every individual bet has negative EV, then every combination, sequence and progression of those bets also has negative EV. There is no arrangement of losing bets that produces a winning system.

The Martingale is worse than flat betting, not equal to it. Because doubling pushes far more total money across the table, you pay the house edge on a much larger volume. The system doesn't beat the edge โ€” it amplifies your exposure to it.

The universal rule for every betting system ever devised: if the underlying bet has a negative expectation, no staking pattern can make the sequence positive. Systems redistribute when and how you lose. They never change whether you lose.

What to Do Instead

Flat bet. Same expected value, far lower variance, no risk of a single catastrophic sequence.
Attack the house edge, not the bet sizing. Moving from American roulette (5.26%) to Pass Line with odds (0.37%) is worth more than any system.
Play fewer hands. Total wagered ร— edge = expected loss. Volume is the variable you actually control.
Use a real bankroll rule. 1โ€“2% per bet, hard loss limit, pre-set stop.
If you want the Martingale feeling, use Paroli. Same EV, but your downside is capped instead of exponential.
