The Short Answer

๐Ÿƒ
No โ€” licensed online blackjack is not rigged. The virtual shoe is shuffled by a certified RNG and the dealer follows fixed, published rules. But the house edge ranges from 0.5% to over 2% depending on table rules โ€” and a 6:5 blackjack payout alone adds 1.39%, more than any cheat would dare.

How Online Shuffling Actually Works

In RNG blackjack the deck is shuffled by the same certified generator that runs slots, and โ€” importantly โ€” it's usually reshuffled after every hand.

  • The dealer's hole card is drawn from the same shuffled shoe as yours. It isn't selected after seeing your hand
  • Your decisions don't change the deck. Hitting doesn't summon a bust card โ€” that card was already in that position
  • Reshuffling every hand is why card counting doesn't work online. There's no depletion to track

Live dealer blackjack uses physical cards, real shoes and optical recognition. You watch every card leave the shoe โ€” which is why it's the version hardest to doubt.

The 6:5 Payout: Worse Than Cheating

This is the single most important thing on this page. A natural blackjack traditionally pays 3:2 โ€” bet $10, win $15. Many tables now pay 6:5 โ€” bet $10, win $12.

Cost of 6:5 over 100 hands at $25
Blackjacks expected: ~4.75 hands 3:2 pays: $37.50 each 6:5 pays: $30.00 each Difference: $7.50 ร— 4.75
โˆ’$35.63 per 100 hands, purely from one payout line

6:5 adds roughly 1.39% to the house edge. That is more than a professional card counter's entire advantage. A perfect basic-strategy player at a 6:5 table is worse off than a mediocre player at a 3:2 table. It's the most expensive detail in the casino, and it's written on the felt.

Every Rule, and What It Costs You

RuleEffect on house edge
Blackjack pays 6:5 (not 3:2)+1.39%
Dealer hits soft 17+0.22%
No double after split+0.14%
Double on 10 & 11 only+0.18%
No re-splitting aces+0.08%
8 decks instead of 1+0.58%
Surrender allowedโˆ’0.08%
Double on any 2 cardsโˆ’0.24%
Re-split aces allowedโˆ’0.08%

A good table with basic strategy runs about 0.5%. A bad one โ€” 6:5, dealer hits soft 17, eight decks, restricted doubling โ€” runs past 2.2%. Four times the price, same game, and the difference is entirely visible before you sit down.

Why the Dealer Seems to Always Win

๐Ÿง
You act first. If you bust, you lose immediately โ€” even if the dealer would have busted too. That single rule is where most of the house edge lives, and it feels like unfairness.
๐Ÿง
The dealer busts 28% of the time. You bust more often, because you're the one making decisions under pressure.
๐Ÿง
You remember the dealer's 21s. A dealer drawing to 21 is memorable; the same dealer busting is forgettable. Your recall is skewed, not the deck.
๐Ÿง
Most players don't use basic strategy. Average play gives up around 2% versus 0.5% optimal. Much of what feels like rigging is unforced error.

Blackjack is the only major casino game where your decisions change the edge by a factor of four. That makes it the best value on the floor โ€” and also the game where blaming the software is most often misplaced.

What to Check Before You Sit

Blackjack pays 3:2 โ€” non-negotiable. If it says 6:5, leave. No other decision comes close in value.
Dealer stands on soft 17 is better than hits. Worth 0.22%.
Double after split allowed, and doubling on any two cards.
Fewer decks is better, all else equal.
Never take insurance. 7.6% house edge dressed up as protection. "Even money" is the same trap.
Skip every side bet. 21+3 runs 3.24%, Perfect Pairs 4.10%, Lucky Ladies past 17%.

Do those six things and blackjack becomes a 0.5% game โ€” the cheapest table in any casino, online or physical. Ignore them and you're paying four times more, while blaming software that never touched your cards.
