How Counting Actually Works
Blackjack is the only major casino game where past cards change future probabilities. Cards are dealt from a finite shoe and not replaced, so a shoe that has already spat out most of its low cards is measurably different from a fresh one.
High cards (10s, face cards, Aces) favour the player. Low cards (2โ6) favour the dealer. The reasons:
- Blackjacks pay 3:2 to you, 1:1 to the house. More 10s and Aces means more natural blackjacks, and you get paid more for them
- The dealer must hit on 16. In a 10-rich shoe, the dealer busts more often
- Doubling down works better when 10s are plentiful
- Insurance becomes profitable at high counts โ the only time it ever is
The Hi-Lo System, Start to Finish
Hi-Lo is the standard system โ simple enough to run at table speed, powerful enough to capture roughly 97% of the theoretical edge available.

Start at 0 when the shoe is shuffled. Add or subtract as each card appears โ yours, other players', the dealer's. A positive running count means the remaining shoe favours you.
True Count: The Step Most People Skip
A running count of +6 means something very different with one deck left than with six decks left. Converting to a true count normalises for this.
Roughly, each +1 of true count is worth about 0.5% of edge. Basic strategy alone sits at about โ0.5%. So:

Bet Spread โ Where the Money Is Made
The count itself earns nothing. The bet spread โ the ratio between your minimum and maximum bet โ is what converts information into money. A counter who flat-bets makes zero.

This is the fundamental tension of card counting. The spread that generates meaningful profit is exactly the spread that gets you identified. Surveillance software flags bet correlation with the count within a few dozen hands. There is no spread that is both profitable and invisible.
What It Realistically Pays in 2026
That $500 standard deviation is the part nobody puts on a poster. It means a losing week is entirely normal, a losing month is common, and you need roughly $25,000โ$50,000 of bankroll to play a $25 game with a low risk of ruin. You are risking a five-figure bankroll to earn less than a decent bartending shift.
The Countermeasures That Changed Everything
Counting isn't illegal anywhere โ you're using your own brain and publicly visible information. But casinos are private property in most jurisdictions and can refuse service. The realistic outcome of successful counting is not being arrested; it's being politely told you may play anything except blackjack.
