The Short Answer

๐Ÿ”€
No โ€” shuffling machines are regulated gaming devices, tested and certified like any other. But continuous shufflers change the economics of the table significantly: they remove shuffle breaks and deal roughly 20% more hands per hour. Same house edge, 20% more of it paid, every hour.

The Two Types, and Why It Matters

๐ŸŽด
ASM โ€” Automatic Shuffling Machine
Neutral for you
Shuffles a full shoe at once, which is then dealt normally until the cut card appears. Card composition still depletes as the shoe progresses, so counting remains theoretically possible. It simply removes the manual shuffle time between shoes.
โ™ป๏ธ
CSM โ€” Continuous Shuffling Machine
Costs you money
Played cards are returned to the machine and reshuffled into the deck after every hand. There is no depletion at all, so the count is permanently reset. Crucially, there are no shuffle pauses โ€” the game never stops.

The distinction most players miss: a CSM very slightly lowers the theoretical house edge (by about 0.02โ€“0.1%, because a freshly mixed deck marginally favours the player on some hands). Then it hands that back many times over by increasing how many hands you play per hour.

How They're Regulated

Shufflers are classed as gaming equipment in regulated jurisdictions, which means they're subject to the same certification regime as slot machines.

  • Randomness testing by laboratories such as GLI or BMM Testlabs before approval
  • Tamper-evident hardware โ€” opening the unit is detectable
  • Periodic re-testing and inspection by the regulator
  • Serious historical incidents involving shufflers have generally been staff collusion or external tampering, not manufacturer design โ€” and they were detected and prosecuted

The incentive analysis is the same as everywhere else in this series: a table already earning a guaranteed percentage has nothing to gain from risking a licence.

The Real Cost: Hands Per Hour

Same table, same edge, different pace
Hand-shuffled shoe: ~70 hands/hour ASM: ~85 hands/hour CSM: ~105 hands/hour At $25/hand, 0.5% edge: Hand-shuffled: โˆ’$8.75/hour CSM: โˆ’$13.13/hour
+50% cost per hour, from removing pauses
โฑ๏ธ
This is the pattern running through every game: the house edge is a price per hand, and the machine controls how many hands you buy per hour. No rigging is required when you can simply increase the transaction rate.

The effect is invisible to players because nothing feels different โ€” the game just flows. There's no moment where the dealer stops, no natural pause to consider leaving. That pause was worth money to you.

What They Did to Card Counting

FormatCountable?Why
Hand shuffle, deep penetrationYesReal depletion, good end-of-shoe windows
ASM with deep cutYes, weakerDepletion exists but pauses are removed
ASM with shallow cutBarelyCutting off 2 of 6 decks removes high-count situations
CSMNoNo depletion whatsoever โ€” the count is meaningless

CSMs were introduced largely as a counter-measure, and they work completely. Counting a CSM table isn't difficult โ€” it's mathematically meaningless, because the composition never changes.

What to Do About It

Prefer hand-shuffled or ASM tables over CSM if you have the choice. Fewer hands per hour is a direct, measurable saving.
Sit at a busier table. More players means fewer hands dealt to you per hour โ€” the opposite of what most players assume they want.
Set a hand count, not just a time limit. "Two hours" costs 50% more at a CSM table than at a hand-shuffled one.
Don't chase CSM tables for the 0.02% edge reduction. It's real and it's irrelevant next to the pace increase.
Check the payout first regardless. A 6:5 table adds 1.39% โ€” dwarfing every shuffler consideration on this page.

The shufflers aren't stacking your deck. They're selling you more hands per hour of the same game, and that's a far more reliable business than cheating would ever be.
