How Keno Works

Eighty numbers, 1 through 80. You pick between 1 and 20 of them (your "spots"). The game draws 20 numbers at random. You're paid according to how many of your picks appear among the 20 drawn.

That's the whole game. There are no decisions after you submit the ticket, no skill element, and no way to influence the draw. Keno is structurally a lottery that runs every four minutes.

๐Ÿ”ข
Your chance of matching is fixed by the 80/20 structure and cannot be altered. The only thing that varies between keno games is the pay table โ€” and that is where a 25% house edge lives.

Why the Edge Is So Brutal

The probability of each outcome is straightforward combinatorics. The casino simply pays out far less than those probabilities warrant.

Keno (land-based)25โ€“30%$25โ€“$30
Keno (state lottery)30โ€“40%$30โ€“$40

Put plainly: $100 wagered on keno at a typical casino returns about $72 on average. The same $100 on a Pass Line with odds returns $99.63. Keno is not a slightly worse choice โ€” it is roughly eighty times more expensive per dollar wagered.

How Many Spots Should You Pick?

Spot count doesn't change the house edge much โ€” that's set by the pay table โ€” but it dramatically changes variance and the frequency of any return at all.

SpotsChance of any payoutVarianceBest for
1 spot25.0%Very lowLongest play time
2 spots6.0%LowSteady, small returns

The general guidance from keno pay-table analysis: 4 to 6 spots gives the least-bad combination of hit frequency and payout structure on most standard tables. Picking 15 or 20 spots is where the pay tables get worst, because the top prizes are effectively unreachable.

The Real Probability of Every Hit

Hit 9 of 90.0000724%1 in 1,380,688
Hit 10 of 100.0000112%1 in 8,911,711

For scale: hitting 10 of 10 in keno is roughly as likely as being dealt a royal flush in five-card draw four hands in a row. Typical keno pay tables offer 20,000:1 to 100,000:1 for it โ€” against true odds of 8.9 million to one. That single line item is where a large chunk of the house edge is hidden.

Crypto Keno: The Same Game at 1% Edge

This is the one genuinely important thing to know about keno. Crypto casinos ship keno as a provably fair house game with a published edge โ€” typically 1% to 4% โ€” rather than a 25โ€“30% lottery pay table.

VersionHouse edgeReturn per $100
Crypto casino keno1โ€“4%$96โ€“$99
Online casino keno6โ€“12%$88โ€“$94
Land-based casino keno25โ€“30%$70โ€“$75
State lottery keno30โ€“40%$60โ€“$70

The mechanics are identical โ€” 80 numbers, 20 drawn โ€” but the pay table is built around a small, disclosed house edge instead of a lottery margin. Many of these implementations also let you verify each draw's fairness cryptographically. If you enjoy keno, this is the version to play; the difference in cost is larger than any strategy decision could ever produce.

Patterns, Hot Numbers and Other Fiction

โŒ
"Hot" and "cold" numbers. Keno boards display recent draws for the same reason craps tables display roadmaps: it drives play. Each draw is independent.
โŒ
Picking consecutive numbers, or spreading them out. Every 20-number combination is equally likely. Layout on the ticket is irrelevant.
โŒ
Playing the same numbers "until they hit." They are not accumulating probability. This is the gambler's fallacy in its purest form.
โŒ
Multi-race tickets "improve" odds. They only commit you to more draws in advance โ€” which raises total wagered and therefore total expected loss.

If You're Going to Play Anyway

Keno is a legitimate form of entertainment โ€” it's slow, social and cheap per ticket. If you enjoy it, play it deliberately:

Play crypto/provably-fair keno if available. 1โ€“4% instead of 25โ€“30%. Nothing else you do comes close to this.
Stick to 4โ€“6 spots. Best structural balance on standard pay tables.
Compare pay tables between venues. Keno pay tables vary far more than any other game's โ€” a 5% swing between two rooms is common.
Bet the minimum. The edge is percentage-based; there is no bet size at which keno becomes good.
Budget it as entertainment, not as gambling. Expect to lose roughly a quarter of what you put in, and enjoy the four minutes between draws.
๐ŸŽซ
The honest summary: keno cannot be beaten and cannot be optimised in any meaningful way. If you want a lottery-shaped experience, it delivers one. If you want to gamble efficiently, almost literally any other game in the building is a better use of the same money.

Reality check: no strategy on this page turns a negative-expectation game into a positive one. Strategy reduces how much the house takes and how fast your bankroll disappears โ€” it does not guarantee profit. Only ever bet money you can afford to lose entirely.
