Why Most Bonuses Aren't What They Appear to Be
A "100% up to $200 bonus" sounds like free money. The casino matches your $200 deposit and gives you $400 to play with. But the bonus comes with a wagering requirement โ say, 40x. That means you must bet $8,000 (40 ร $200 bonus) before you can withdraw a single dollar.
At a 5% house edge (typical for slots, which casinos push for wagering), you expect to lose $400 on $8,000 of action. Your starting bankroll is $400. The math: you'll lose everything before clearing the wagering requirement, on average. The "free" $200 actually cost you your $200 deposit.
This doesn't mean all bonuses are traps. Low wagering requirements on high-RTP games can be genuinely positive โ you get real extra money for playing games you'd play anyway. The skill is knowing the difference before you click "Claim."
The 5 Types of Casino Bonuses
How Wagering Requirements Actually Work
A wagering requirement (WR) of 30x means you must place bets totalling 30ร the bonus amount before the bonus converts to real withdrawable cash. Some casinos apply the WR to bonus only; others apply it to bonus + deposit combined. This is a critical distinction.
WR applies to bonus only (favourable): $100 bonus with 30x WR = bet $3,000 total to clear.
WR applies to bonus + deposit (unfavourable): $100 deposit + $100 bonus with 30x WR = bet $6,000 total. That's twice the work for the same bonus amount.
Always check whether the WR applies to bonus amount only or to deposit + bonus. Casinos that apply WR to deposit + bonus are offering roughly half the value of casinos that apply it to bonus only. This single factor can turn a good bonus into a terrible one.
Wagering requirements are typically time-limited โ you have 7 to 30 days to clear them. If you don't clear in time, the bonus and any bonus winnings are forfeited. Know your deadline before you start.
The EV Formula: Calculate Any Bonus in 30 Seconds
Expected Value (EV) tells you how much money, on average, a bonus will actually add to or remove from your bankroll. Here's the formula:
Example 1 โ Negative EV (Typical Slots Bonus)
This is a -$100 EV bonus. On average you'll lose your $100 deposit clearing the requirement. The bonus effectively gave you nothing.
Example 2 โ Positive EV (Low WR Bonus)
But there's a catch: most casinos restrict blackjack to 10โ20% wagering contribution. If blackjack only contributes 10%, you'd need to bet $15,000 to meet the 15x WR โ not $1,500. That transforms this excellent-looking bonus into a mathematical nightmare. Always check game contribution rates (next section).
Game Contribution Rates โ The Hidden Trap
Casinos don't let all games contribute equally to wagering requirements. A $10 bet on slots might contribute $10 towards the WR. A $10 bet on blackjack might only contribute $1 (10% contribution). This effectively multiplies the wagering requirement for table games.
| Game | Typical Contribution | Effective WR (on 30x bonus) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slots | 100% | 30x | Standard |
| Crash / Dice | 50โ100% | 30โ60x | Check T&Cs |
| Roulette | 10โ20% | 150โ300x | Avoid |
| Blackjack | 10% | 300x | Avoid |
| Baccarat | 5โ10% | 300โ600x | Never |
| Video Poker | 10โ20% | 150โ300x | Avoid |
This is why the bonus formula requires you to use the effective house edge โ the house edge of slots โ even if your preferred game is blackjack. If you're playing blackjack at 10% contribution, you need 10ร more bets to clear the WR, which means the formula becomes: EV = Bonus ร (1 โ (WR ร 10) ร 0.005). A 30x WR on blackjack at 10% contribution is mathematically equivalent to a 300x WR. Avoid.
How to Find Genuinely +EV Bonuses
Target low WR. Anything under 20x on slots (4% edge) has positive EV. Under 30x is borderline. Over 35x is almost always negative. Some crypto casinos now offer 10โ15x WR welcome bonuses โ these are the rare genuinely good ones.
Look for cashback with no wagering. A 15% cashback on losses with 1x wagering (or none) is almost always better than a matching deposit bonus. You're essentially lowering the casino's edge on every session โ no cliff-edge pressure to clear a WR in 7 days.
No-deposit bonuses are always worth it. Your downside is zero. Even a 60x WR on a $20 no-deposit bonus at 5% slots edge gives you: EV = $20 ร (1 โ 60 ร 0.05) = $20 ร (โ2) = technically negative, but your actual risk is $0. You can lose at most the bonus itself. Claim them all, play until you lose, move on.
Separate the bonus from your deposit. Some casinos allow you to refuse the bonus at withdrawal โ meaning you can play with your deposit at full house edge without WR pressure. This is useful if you want to play table games normally and just want the deposit matched for slots wagering. Read the terms.
