🎖️
The short version: cashback reduces the house edge you pay, but it never reverses it. 10% cashback on a 4% edge game leaves you paying 3.6% — an improvement, not a discount on a purchase. And you only receive it by losing first.

How the Tiers Are Built

VIP levels are almost always driven by wagered volume, not deposits and not losses directly. That distinction matters: wagering $10,000 through a low-edge game costs you far less than wagering $10,000 through slots, but both move you up the ladder at the same rate.

Which is why programmes frequently exclude or discount low-edge games from tier progression — the same mechanism as bonus contribution rates. If blackjack counts at 10% toward your VIP progress, the programme is telling you what it wants you to play.

What Cashback Actually Changes

Effective house edge with cashback
Effective edge = edge × (1 − cashback rate) Slots at 4%, 10% cashback → 4 × 0.90 = 3.60% Slots at 4%, 20% cashback → 4 × 0.80 = 3.20% Roulette 2.7%, 10% cashback → 2.7 × 0.90 = 2.43%
Better. Still negative. Always.

Put in money terms: on $10,000 wagered through a 4% slot, your expected loss is $400. With 10% cashback it becomes $360. You are $40 better off than you would have been — and $360 worse off than not playing.

This is the honest frame for every loyalty scheme. It is a discount on a cost, not a source of income. A programme that returns 10% of your losses is competing with a programme that returns 5%, and both are competing for money you have already lost.

The Conditions on the Rebate

The headline rate is rarely the whole term. Three conditions do most of the work:

ConditionEffect
Cashback paid as bonus fundsComes with wagering — it is not cash
Calculated on net loss over a periodA winning week can cancel a losing one
Capped per periodThe advertised rate applies only to a slice

The first is the important one. Cashback credited as a bonus with a 20× wagering requirement is worth a fraction of its face value — run it through the expected value of a bonus and a $100 rebate at 20× on a 4% game has an expected value closer to $20.

Rakeback, and Why Poker Is Different

Poker rake is not a house edge — it is a fee taken from a pot contested between players. Rakeback returns a share of that fee, and because poker is a game where skill determines who wins the pot, rakeback genuinely changes the break-even point for a competent player.

A player who is marginally losing before rakeback can be marginally profitable after it. That is a real effect, and it has no equivalent in casino games — no amount of cashback makes a slot beatable, because there is no opponent to be better than.

When It Is Genuinely Worth It

1
Cash, not bonus funds. A rebate paid as withdrawable cash is worth its face value. One paid as a bonus is worth a fraction, and the fraction depends on the wagering multiplier.
2
If you were going to play anyway. Cashback improves an existing decision. It is not a reason to make a new one — increasing your wagering to reach a tier costs more than the tier returns, always.
3
On poker rake. The only version of this that can move a player from losing to winning.
4
Never as compensation for a worse game. A 20% cashback offer on a 6% edge game costs you 4.8%. A plain 2.7% European roulette table with no cashback is cheaper.

Reading Your Own Programme

Find three numbers in the terms: the cashback percentage, whether it pays cash or bonus, and the wagering multiplier if it is bonus. With those, the effective edge calculation above tells you what your programme is actually worth in a single line.

Then compare it to the simplest alternative — playing a lower-edge game with no programme at all. Frequently that comparison ends the discussion.

Reality check: no strategy on this page turns a negative-expectation game into a positive one. Strategy reduces how much the house takes and how fast your bankroll disappears — it does not guarantee profit. Only ever bet money you can afford to lose entirely.
