🛡️
The short version: operator-level exclusion covers one site. A national register covers every licensed operator in the country at once. A bank block covers every gambling transaction regardless of site or licence. Use both.

The Four Layers

LayerCoversStrength
Operator settingsOne siteWeakest
National registerAll licensed operators in that countryStrong
Bank blockAll gambling transactions, any siteStrongest

They stack, and the reason to use more than one is straightforward: each has a gap the others cover. A national register does not stop an offshore site. A bank block does not stop crypto. Device software does not follow you to a different phone.

National Registers

A single registration blocks every operator licensed in that jurisdiction. Registration is free and the exclusion cannot be lifted early.

The important limitation, stated plainly: these registers cover licensed operators. A site holding a Curaçao licence and serving your country without a local licence is not connected to the register. This is one of the practical differences between licensing regimes discussed in our guide to country blocks and licences.

Bank-Level Blocks

This is the layer most people do not know exists, and it is the most effective.

Most major banks now let you switch on a gambling block in the app. It declines any transaction with a gambling merchant category code — every site, licensed or not, in any country. Critically, most implement a cooling-off period of 24 to 48 hours before the block can be switched off, which removes the impulse route entirely.

Why it works better than everything else: it sits with an institution that has no interest in your gambling, it applies universally rather than site by site, and turning it off requires deliberate action separated from the moment you wanted to gamble. That last property is what the psychology of tilt says matters most — decisions made calmly, enforced later, by something you cannot override in the moment.

Its one gap is crypto. A card payment to an exchange may or may not be coded as gambling, and a transfer from an existing wallet is invisible to your bank entirely.

Device Blocking

Software such as Gamban, BetBlocker and GamBlock blocks gambling sites and apps at the device level. BetBlocker is free. They are useful as a supporting layer — particularly for offshore sites a national register cannot reach — but they are device-specific and can be uninstalled.

Operator Tools

Weakest, but worth setting because they are immediate and take thirty seconds:

1
Deposit limits. Daily, weekly or monthly. Increases must legally be delayed at licensed operators; decreases apply at once.
2
Loss limits. Stronger than deposit limits, because they cap the net rather than the input.
3
Session time limits and reality checks. A prompt at intervals showing time played and net result.
4
Time-out. A short cooling-off from 24 hours to six weeks, without full self-exclusion.

Talking to Someone

Tools handle access. They do not handle the reason, and for most people the reason is where the actual work is.

Free, confidential support exists in most countries and does not require you to have decided anything in advance: GamCare (UK, 0808 8020 133), the National Council on Problem Gambling (US, 1-800-MY-RESET — the long-standing 1-800-522-4700 still connects to the same helpline), Gambling Help Online (Australia, 1800 858 858), and Gambling Therapy internationally. Our Safer Play page lists more.

If you are reading this page for someone else, the bank block is the one worth mentioning first. It is the least confrontational to suggest, it takes two minutes, and it is the only layer that does not depend on the gambling industry cooperating.

Reality check: no strategy on this page turns a negative-expectation game into a positive one. Strategy reduces how much the house takes and how fast your bankroll disappears — it does not guarantee profit. Only ever bet money you can afford to lose entirely.
