How Progressives Are Funded
Every wager on a progressive slot is split. Most of it feeds the normal paytable; a slice โ typically 1% to 5% โ is diverted into the jackpot pool. That pool grows until someone hits it, then resets to a seed value funded by the operator or the game studio.

This is where most progressive players lose money without noticing. The jackpot has to be funded from somewhere, and it comes out of the ordinary paytable.

You pay the jackpot tax on every spin, whether or not you're eligible for the jackpot. On many progressives the top prize requires a maximum bet โ but the contribution is taken from all bets. Playing below max bet on such a game means funding a prize you cannot win.
Calculating the Break-Even Jackpot
The jackpot's expected value contribution is its size multiplied by the probability of hitting it. Set that equal to the shortfall in base RTP and solve.
Above $2.4M in that example, total expected return exceeds 100% and the game is positive EV. That's not a marketing claim โ it's arithmetic, and it's why professional syndicates have historically tracked specific jackpots.

Small progressives cross into +EV constantly. A standalone jackpot with a $5,000 break-even that seeds at $1,000 and grows fast will spend a meaningful share of its life above break-even. The multi-million networked jackpots almost never do โ they typically hit before reaching their break-even point.
Why +EV Still Doesn't Mean You Should Play
A positive expected value with a 1-in-20-million event attached is not the same thing as a good bet. Three reasons:
