Why Position Decides Everything

Poker is a game of incomplete information, and position is the mechanism that determines who has more of it. Acting last means you see every opponent's decision before making yours โ€” on every street, for the entire hand.

The effect is not subtle. Win-rate data across millions of hands consistently shows the same shape:

PositionSeats after youTypical win rate (bb/100)
Button (BTN)2 (blinds only)+25 to +40
Cutoff (CO)3+10 to +20
Hijack (HJ)4+5 to +12
Middle (MP)50 to +8
Under the gun (UTG)6โˆ’2 to +5
Small blind (SB)1โˆ’25 to โˆ’15
Big blind (BB)0 preflopโˆ’45 to โˆ’30
๐ŸŽฏ
The same two cards are a clear fold from UTG and a clear raise from the button. Hand strength is relative to position, not absolute. A player who opens the same range from every seat is guaranteed to be losing money from at least four of them.

Opening Ranges by Position

These are standard 6-max cash-game opening ranges at 100 big blinds โ€” solid, widely used, and close enough to solver output for any stake below high-stakes.

SB35โ€“40%Raise or fold โ€” never limp. Similar to CO plus more suited hands

The button opens three times as many hands as UTG. That's not aggression for its own sake โ€” it's the mathematical consequence of acting last on every postflop street and only having two players left to get through.

3-Betting: Value and Bluffs

A 3-bet is a re-raise of an opening raise. A well-constructed 3-bet range contains both strong value hands and hands that play well when called โ€” not a narrow band of premiums, which is transparent and easy to play against.

โ™ ๏ธ
Why suited Aces are the standard bluff. A5s and A4s hold an Ace (blocking AA, AK and AQ combos in your opponent's continuing range) while retaining flush and wheel-straight potential. They lose the least when called and win the most when they connect. Offsuit trash has neither property โ€” never 3-bet with it.

Defending the Blinds

The blinds are your worst positions, but they come with a discount: money is already invested. That discount changes which hands are profitable calls.

Facing an open fromBB defend %Typical action
UTG (tight range)~30%Call broadly, 3-bet only premiums
CO~40%Call wide, 3-bet more often
BTN (widest range)~55%Defend very wide โ€” their range is weak
SB~60%Widest defence, you have position postflop

The small blind should almost never call. You're out of position against everyone and the big blind can still squeeze. Standard play is raise-or-fold from the SB, and the raise should be larger than usual (3.5โ€“4bb) to discourage the BB from defending wide.

The Five Biggest Preflop Leaks

1๏ธโƒฃ
Playing too many hands from early position. Opening 25% from UTG instead of 15% is a losing strategy no amount of postflop skill fixes โ€” you're out of position with the worst range at the table.
2๏ธโƒฃ
Limping. Open-limping forfeits the chance to win the pot immediately, caps your range, and invites multiway pots where your equity is worst. Raise or fold.
3๏ธโƒฃ
Calling 3-bets out of position with speculative hands. Small pairs and suited connectors need implied odds and position. Out of position facing a 3-bet, they have neither.
4๏ธโƒฃ
Never 3-betting as a bluff. A value-only 3-bet range is instantly readable. Opponents fold everything except hands that beat you.
5๏ธโƒฃ
Overvaluing offsuit broadways. KJo, QTo and ATo are the most over-played hands in low-stakes poker. Reverse implied odds are severe โ€” when you hit, you're often dominated.

Adjusting to Your Table

Table typeAdjustment
Very tight / nittyOpen wider, steal blinds relentlessly, 3-bet bluff more
Loose passive (many callers)Tighten offsuit hands, value-bet bigger, play more suited hands for their multiway equity
Aggressive / 3-bet heavyTighten opens from early seats, flat more with strong hands, 4-bet the top of your range
Short-stacked tableReduce implied-odds hands (small pairs, suited connectors), favour high-card strength

How to Actually Learn These

Start with just two ranges. UTG (15%) and BTN (45%). Interpolate everything in between. Two memorised ranges beat six half-remembered ones.
Keep a range chart visible while playing online. Perfectly legal, and it builds the recall you need for live play.
Review your VPIP weekly. Target 20โ€“24% in 6-max, 15โ€“18% full ring. Above 30% is the single clearest sign of a leak.
Never limp. Not once. This one rule alone moves most low-stakes players toward break-even.
Add 3-bet bluffs last. Get opening ranges solid first, then layer in A5sโ€“A2s and suited broadways.

Preflop ranges aren't the exciting part of poker. They're the part that determines whether the exciting parts are profitable. A player with disciplined ranges and mediocre postflop play beats a creative player entering 35% of pots from every seat โ€” consistently, and without ever needing to make a difficult decision.
