Why Position Decides Everything
Poker is a game of incomplete information, and position is the mechanism that determines who has more of it. Acting last means you see every opponent's decision before making yours โ on every street, for the entire hand.
The effect is not subtle. Win-rate data across millions of hands consistently shows the same shape:
| Position | Seats after you | Typical win rate (bb/100) |
|---|---|---|
| Button (BTN) | 2 (blinds only) | +25 to +40 |
| Cutoff (CO) | 3 | +10 to +20 |
| Hijack (HJ) | 4 | +5 to +12 |
| Middle (MP) | 5 | 0 to +8 |
| Under the gun (UTG) | 6 | โ2 to +5 |
| Small blind (SB) | 1 | โ25 to โ15 |
| Big blind (BB) | 0 preflop | โ45 to โ30 |
Opening Ranges by Position
These are standard 6-max cash-game opening ranges at 100 big blinds โ solid, widely used, and close enough to solver output for any stake below high-stakes.
| Position | % of hands | Range |
|---|---|---|
| UTG | 15% | 77+, ATs+, KTs+, QTs+, JTs, T9s, AQo+, KQo |
| MP | 18% | 66+, A9s+, K9s+, Q9s+, J9s+, T8s+, 98s, AJo+, KQo |
| HJ | 22% | 55+, A7s+, K8s+, Q8s+, J8s+, T8s+, 97s+, 87s, ATo+, KJo+, QJo |
| CO | 28% | 44+, A2s+, K6s+, Q7s+, J7s+, T7s+, 96s+, 86s+, 75s+, A9o+, KTo+, QTo+, JTo |
| BTN | 45% | 22+, A2s+, K2s+, Q4s+, J6s+, T6s+, 95s+, 85s+, 74s+, 64s+, 53s+, A2o+, K8o+, Q9o+, J9o+, T9o |
| SB | 35โ40% | Raise or fold โ never limp. Similar to CO plus more suited hands |
The button opens three times as many hands as UTG. That's not aggression for its own sake โ it's the mathematical consequence of acting last on every postflop street and only having two players left to get through.
Reading Range Notation
| Notation | Means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| AKs | Ace-King suited | Aโ Kโ |
| AKo | Ace-King offsuit | Aโ Kโฅ |
| 77+ | 77 and every higher pair | 77, 88, 99, TT, JJ, QQ, KK, AA |
| ATs+ | Suited Ace-Ten and better kickers | ATs, AJs, AQs, AKs |
| T9s | Exactly Ten-Nine suited | Tโฆ9โฆ |
| 75s+ | Suited 75, 76 (gappers up to connected) | 75s, 76s |
3-Betting: Value and Bluffs
A 3-bet is a re-raise of an opening raise. A well-constructed 3-bet range contains both strong value hands and hands that play well when called โ not a narrow band of premiums, which is transparent and easy to play against.
| Your position | Value 3-bets | Bluff 3-bets | Total % |
|---|---|---|---|
| vs UTG open | QQ+, AKs, AKo | A5s, A4s, KJs | 4โ5% |
| vs MP open | JJ+, AQs+, AKo | A5sโA2s, KTs, QJs | 6โ7% |
| vs CO open | TT+, AJs+, AQo+ | A5sโA2s, K9s+, QTs, J9s | 9โ11% |
| vs BTN open | 99+, ATs+, AJo+ | A2sโA5s, K7s+, Q9s+, T9s, 98s | 13โ15% |
Defending the Blinds
The blinds are your worst positions, but they come with a discount: money is already invested. That discount changes which hands are profitable calls.
| Facing an open from | BB defend % | Typical action |
|---|---|---|
| UTG (tight range) | ~30% | Call broadly, 3-bet only premiums |
| CO | ~40% | Call wide, 3-bet more often |
| BTN (widest range) | ~55% | Defend very wide โ their range is weak |
| SB | ~60% | Widest defence, you have position postflop |
The small blind should almost never call. You're out of position against everyone and the big blind can still squeeze. Standard play is raise-or-fold from the SB, and the raise should be larger than usual (3.5โ4bb) to discourage the BB from defending wide.
The Five Biggest Preflop Leaks
Adjusting to Your Table
| Table type | Adjustment |
|---|---|
| Very tight / nitty | Open wider, steal blinds relentlessly, 3-bet bluff more |
| Loose passive (many callers) | Tighten offsuit hands, value-bet bigger, play more suited hands for their multiway equity |
| Aggressive / 3-bet heavy | Tighten opens from early seats, flat more with strong hands, 4-bet the top of your range |
| Short-stacked table | Reduce implied-odds hands (small pairs, suited connectors), favour high-card strength |
How to Actually Learn These
Preflop ranges aren't the exciting part of poker. They're the part that determines whether the exciting parts are profitable. A player with disciplined ranges and mediocre postflop play beats a creative player entering 35% of pots from every seat โ consistently, and without ever needing to make a difficult decision.
