If red comes up 10 times in a row (probability: roughly 1 in 1,024), the probability of red on the next spin is still 18/37 = 48.6% on a European wheel. Identical to any other spin. The wheel doesn't know what happened before.
The math: The probability of any sequence of spins is calculated by multiplying the individual probabilities. Past events cannot alter future probabilities in a system with no memory. The Martingale is the most popular roulette "system." After every loss, you double your bet. When you eventually win, you recover all losses and profit one unit. In theory, it sounds bulletproof. In practice, it hits two hard walls.
Wall 1: Table limits

The last column is what matters. No system escapes the house edge. D'Alembert loses money more slowly, which means you lose the same amount spread across more spins — which might actually be a reason to prefer it, but not because it "wins more."
What Statistics CAN Tell You
Dismissing all statistics would be wrong. There are things the math can meaningfully tell you — they just don't involve beating the house edge.
Expected loss per hour

No statistical method can predict the next outcome on a fair wheel. Each spin's outcome is determined by physics at the moment of the spin — not by previous results. Past data contains zero information about future outcomes in a truly random system.
Hot and cold numbers
Casinos display "hot" and "cold" numbers specifically because players bet on them. A number that has come up 8 times in the last 100 spins has no higher probability of coming up next than one that hasn't appeared at all. Both have exactly a 1/37 probability on a European wheel. The display is a psychological tool, not statistical information.
Whether the wheel is biased
Historically, physical wheel bias was real and exploitable. Early roulette wheels had manufacturing defects that caused certain numbers to hit more often. Professional gamblers like Joseph Jagger won fortunes in the 1870s by tracking wheel results. Modern casino wheels are precision instruments, calibrated regularly, and monitored by software. Wheel bias in a modern casino is effectively zero — and even if it existed at a tiny level, you'd need tens of thousands of recorded spins to detect it statistically, by which point the casino would have replaced the wheel.
When a "losing streak" will end
This is the Gambler's Fallacy again, repackaged. If you've lost 7 even-money bets in a row, your probability of winning the next is still 48.6%. The streak has no predictive power. The only thing you know for certain after 7 losses is that you've lost 7 bets.
The Only Rational Approach
Given everything above, the rational strategy for roulette is simple — and it won't make you rich, but it will make your sessions honest.
- Play European, not American. The difference between 2.70% and 5.26% doubles your expected loss per hour for identical bets. Always choose European when available.
- Set a session budget before you sit down. Decide what you're willing to spend — treat it as entertainment cost, not an investment. Stop when it's gone.
- Flat bet, don't chase. Flat betting doesn't improve your expected value, but it keeps your session predictable. Chasing losses with progressive systems just accelerates the inevitable while adding variance you don't control.
- Choose your volatility preference consciously. If you want longer sessions with more action, bet even money. If you want one big shot, bet straight numbers — but understand your bankroll will be depleted faster on average.
- Ignore all "patterns." Hot numbers, cold numbers, streaks — none of it contains information about the next spin. Treating it as information is the single most expensive mistake roulette players make.
The honest summary: Roulette is a negative expected value game. No strategy changes this. What statistics can do is help you understand your real cost per hour, choose the right volatility for your bankroll, and avoid the mathematical traps that systems sellers profit from.
